Madras Motor Sports Club [MMSC]

Starting against the background of World War II at the defunct military airstrip, Sholavaram, that gave birth to Madras Motorsports Club in the year 1953 consisting of forty founder members. The Madras Motor Sports Club has been the pioneer in developing and promoting motorsport in India since then and continues its effort in taking Indian motorsports to a greater heights in the years to come.

The club once formed, organised some of the best races events in Independent India at Sholavaram. Racing at Sholavaram was conducted annual, that converged people from all parts of the country and this event shot to the fame not only in India but across the world.

MMSC is credited for organising some of the best grand prix at Sholavaram that lead to the development of Motorsports in India as well as breaded some of the finest motorsports talent in the country. The fame of Sholavaram spread across Sri Lanka, South East Asia up to Europe.

This timeline was considered as the golden era of Indian motorsports, while making Madras the Mecca of Motorsports in India. Thanks to the patrons of MMSC who put this great effort and vision that is carried by current board at MMSC even today.

Further when Nazir Hoosein wanted to organise India’s greatest rally “The Himalayan Rally” he entrusted the team at MMSC to organise marshals, officials and other support system as he believed in the exceptional finesse and expertise by team MMSC. Definitely MMSC has played a vital & crucial role in supporting “The Himalayan Rally.”

Post the era of racing in defunct air strip, as most of the cities lost the momentum and somewhat motorsports in those cities ended. The team at MMSC was not ready to give up, hence they purchased 300 acres, went to England, got the drawing done and built India’s first purpose built racetrack in the year 1979.

This track named as Madras Motor Racing Track (MMRT) that promoted and developed Motorsports in India since 1979. This track is continuously being modified to the ever demanding modern car racing and in this process MMRT secured its FIA Grade-2 international certification in 2014, making it the only club in India, which owns such a facility. Further upgraded with international-standard Paddock, VIP hospitality suites, 20 spacious garages and a separate Paddock on the western side has been developed keeping in mind the modern age racing requirements.

MMSC has organised the Porsche Super Cup, Formula Campos, Formula Asia, Asian touring car championships, Formula 3, Tata Prima Truck racing championship, the FIM Asia Road Racing Championships (2-wheelers) besides a host of other motorsport events over the years. The club also has active participation for its events from vehicle manufacturers who also use the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) extensively for testing their products.

From 1953 to till date MMSC is the most active and futuristic Motorsports clubs of India that can be considered as the backbone of Indian Motorsports. In the recent endeavour to develop motorsports at grassroot level, MMSC has developed CIK approved International Karting track that will be Inaugurated on 19th September 2024.
